The victim was not injured during the incident.

The thief was white, aged around 15 to 18-years-old, with short brown hair and possibly wearing dark clothing.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the theft.

A SHOPKEEPER was threatened with a knife during a robbery in South Derbyshire.

Two men walked into Yates Convenience Store, in Union Road, Swadlincote, at 8.30pm last night.

One of them produced a knife and the pair then demanded the worker open the till.

They then reached inside and took cash as well as cigarettes.

Investigating officers viewed CCTV of the offence provided by the shop and two men, aged 33 and 24 and both from Newhall, were arrested at a house shortly afterwards.

They are this morning in custody being questioned about the alleged offence.

Inspector Paul Cannon, who is in charge of policing in South Derbyshire, said: "The fact that this shopkeeper was threatened with a knife is of concern to us.

"We have recovered some cash and goods at the house where the two men were arrested."

CO-OP department stores in Derby, Ilkeston and Long Eaton are to be closed, it has been announced today. The Derby Department Store, Exchange Street, Ilkeston Department Store, South Street and the Long Eaton Bed Centre, Cross Street are all to close. None of the food stores are affected by the closures, the company has said. Midlands Co-operative confirmed the Society's plans to close its Fashion & Home business.

MartynCheatle, Chief Executive said: "Major changes in the retailing sector and the ever increasing growth in online shopping over recent years have created significant and fundamental challenges for the Society's Fashion & Home business.
"Whilst our other businesses have flourished, the Society has been incurring substantial losses from the Fashion & Home operation for more than a decade and in spite of sustained efforts to improve performance, the latest financial projections indicate a further decline with increasing losses in future years.
"Unfortunately, efforts to sell the business as a going concern have proved unsuccessful and after much consideration it is with great regret that the Board of Directors has taken this very difficult decision to close the Fashion & Home business. Please be assured this decision was not taken lightly and was necessary to protect the long-term future and growth of the Society as a whole.
"A plan has been put in place for a phased closure of nine Fashion & Home stores over the next six months.

"This could potentially affect some 388 store-based employees, although every effort will be made to redeploy employees into other business areas and it is anticipated that the Society's ambitious new food store development programme will help facilitate this.

"The Society is also exploring viable change of use options for the Fashion & Home sites.
"As stated we will fully investigate redeployment opportunities in surrounding business units and Society operations. The Society is in full consultation with all affected staff and trade unions.
"All customer orders and gift vouchers will be honoured, and customer enquires will continue to be handled by staff at our Fashion & Home stores during the phased closure.

"In addition staff in our local food stores will be able to provide ongoing customer service; alternatively customers can contact the Society's Customer Service team at our Head Office in Lichfield."

Other stores slated for closure are in Chesterfield, Coalville, Stafford, West Bridgford, Wigston, Raunds.

A 22-YEAR-OLD motorist has been warned by the police about his driving after he was spotted pulling youths who were sat in an inflated inner tube along icy roads in South Derbyshire.

Police received two calls to the incidents, which took place in Hartshorne, yesterday.

The first call came from a resident in Goseley Avenue at noon and the second call from someone in Hartshill Road, at 1pm.

Officers attended and caught the man, who is from Woodville, pulling the youths with his Audi A3.

A rope had been tied to the rear bumper and the other end was tied around the inner tube.

Inspector Paul Cannon, who is in charge of policing in South Derbyshire, said: "Those concerned must have thought this was a bit of fun
but there was no regard to safety.

"We warned the motorist and those involved of the dangers and offered him some very strong advice that if he were caught again we would seize his vehicle."

Q&A: Army redundancies defence cuts

$

Some 5,000 Army personnel are to be made redundant, as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) embarks on its latest round of defence cuts. The redundancies, announced today, will primarily affect soldiers, although it is understood medical personnel may also be liable to be dismissed. This is the third round of redundancies since 2011. But what are the defence cuts about and why are they being implemented? Find out with our Q&A guide: The basics The Ministry of Defence has today announced a third round of Army redundancies - up to 5,300 job losses. It is understood the Army will bear the brunt of the cuts, as the Navy and RAF have already completed most of their necessary cuts. Personnel will today find out who is and isn't being considered for this latest round of redundancies, and how many will go once decisions have been taken in the summer. Redundancy notices will be issued on June 18. Any personnel preparing for, serving on, or recovering from operations on that date will not lose their jobs unless they have applied for redundancy. The redundancies are part of cuts already announced by the Government to reduce Army numbers from 102,000 to 82,000 by 2017. This is the third round of redundancies since 2011. More than 2,800 personnel from across the armed forces were made redundant during the first round in August and September 2011. The second round, in June 2012, saw more than 4,000 military personnel lose their jobs. Why are these redundancies being made? The overall aim is to help fill a £38 billion hole in the defence budget. About 17,000 armed forces jobs are scheduled to go under the terms of the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR), announced in 2010. The Navy and Air Force have to cut 5,000 jobs each, the Army 7,000 and about 25,000 civilian staff working at the MoD face redundancy. In 2011 a further reduction of 12,000 was identified for the regular Army, as the Government sought to put greater emphasis on military reserves. By the end of the process the Army will have scaled down to 80,000 soldiers, a reduction of around 20,000. This has been done primarily through a redundancy process, but also through slower recruitment. It will result in the smallest army since the 18th century, Sky News reports. What will happen to those made redundant? No-one will be made redundant immediately. Final decisions will be made by June. Anyone accepted for voluntary redundancy will be expected to work a six-month notice period and those selected for compulsory redundancy will have a full year to find alternative employment before leaving the service. Some 72 per cent of redundancies ended up being voluntary in the last round of cuts. What will happen next? This third round of redundancies will most likely be followed by further sackings later this year or early next year. This has not yet been confirmed, however. The MoD today said further job losses among Royal Navy and RAF medical and dental personnel, as well as additional Army redundancies, was "likely". Aren't people worried about these cuts? Shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy fears the extra emphasis on the contribution of reservists coupled with the speed of the reduction in the Army's size could cause problems. Mr Murphy told the BBC the manner of the cuts, with its emphasis on reservists, could cause difficulties if there were problems freeing them up to take on more responsibilities. He said: "If we're going to ask more of men and women in other jobs to be involved in the reservists, which can be a fantastic opportunity, we have to rely upon the goodwill and support of employers. "If a reservist goes for an interview and they're equally qualified with someone else who also goes for the interview, we have to work with employers to make sure they don't have at the back of their mind: 'My gosh, this employee, as a reservist, will be away for six months and I can't cope with that as a company'." Labour has also questioned the cuts in the wake of the recent hostage crisis in Algeria. Meanwhile many retired service chiefs question the UK's ability to face global threats with a reduced military. America's former top commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, recently said Britain risks being shut out of key decisions in the "special relationship" with the US if it does not maintain credible military capabilities. And earlier this month three military experts warned the cuts must be reversed if the armed forces are to protect British interests and meet their commitments for the rest of the decade.

Spinal Cord Injury Victims Neglected by National Health Care

Advertisement Feature British doctor backed by personal injury solicitors after research into psycho-social issues Spinal cord injuries (SCI) have been described as 'condemning sufferers to life sentences' by specialist UK solicitors, after hearing the grim findings on SCI care, by Doctor Brett Smith. Dr Smith is a Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University and for over 15 years, has tirelessly researched the psycho-social issues attached to disability. His recent publication on spinal cord injuries and how victims are coping with everyday life revealed 60 per cent of sufferers living in care homes have considered suicide. This single statistic was etched into the mind of Allison O'Reilly, Chief Operating Officer for Spencers Solicitors, after she attended a meeting in the House of Lords, where Dr Smith spoke on behalf of Aspire (a charity dedicated to supporting SCI victims in Britain). Allison reported on Dr Smith's findings about suicide:'One of the sufferers succeeded in turning off his ventilator, only to be saved by staff. When they came to investigate what had happened, he was too scared to reveal what he'd done. Dr Smith's evidence was of SCI victims nationwide feeling as if they'd been condemned to life sentences, so poorly cared for were they in care homes/i>' Dr Smith and his team went out and interviewed 20 SCI victims who had experienced life in a British care home. Allison's account of things alone is enough to get a grasp of how sad the reality is for these people. Hopefully, the quality of treatment will be reformed now more commanding figures are bolstering Dr Smith's main points:
  • Any disabled person is entitled to suitable housing under the Human Rights Act - SCI victims are currently not receiving this at all.
  • Placing someone in care for 24 months is more expensive than adapting their own homes or accommodating people into social housing.
  • Employers do not recruit people who are living in care. Helping SCI victims to adapt their homes and live their lives privately could mean they find work. As by-products, this would see people contributing to the economy and feeling much better about themselves as part of society.
  • If any one of us was in an accident tomorrow, they could be facing life in a care home simply because they can't afford to adjust their current living conditions.
  • Simply as a human being, it is difficult to see an argument against Dr Smith's campaign. Allison O'Reilly fully shares his view and alongside her duty to help injured persons secure spinal injury compensation, it looks as though she will be joining the campaign from an awareness-raising angle. The lawyer was recently quoted by Spencers Solicitors Director, John Spencer, in a passionate blog on the subject:'Will things change for SCI victims? I hope so – but only if we can make their plight better known'

FORMER Barnsley boss Keith Hill has returned to former club Rochdale. Hill was relieved of his duties at Oakwell earlier this month but is now back at Spotland after being announced as successor to John Coleman, who was sacked on Monday. The 43-year-old has signed a contract with Rochdale until the end of the season. "When the club approached me about coming back to Spotland I didn't hesitate," said Hill. "Rochdale Football Club will, and always will remain dear to me, and to be honest it was a no-brainer." NOTTINGHAM Forest are reported to be closing in on Birmingham City winger Chris Burke. Burke played under Forest boss Alex McLeish at St Andrews. The former Cardiff City wide man is out of contract in the summer and Birmingham could cash in due to their financial problems. CARDIFF City could offer a deal to free agent Simon Lappin. Lappin was released by Norwich City this week and could return to Cardiff, where he had a loan spell at the end of last season. The 29-year-old can play in midfield or at left-back. FULHAM are reported to be lining up a move for Blackpool midfielder Ludovic Sylvestre. Sylvestre, whose contract expires in the summer, has also been linked with Crystal Palace.

KIERON Freeman is the latest Derby County player to get an international call-up. The defender has been named in the Wales Under-21 squad for a friendly against Iceland next month. The match will be played at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli on Wednesday, February 6 (3pm kick-off). Freeman has eight under-21 caps to his name so far. The team is currently managed by former Rams player Geraint Williams.

Conor Sammon: Derby County switch has helped me earn call-up

CONOR Sammon says joining Derby County has played a big part in his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland's senior squad.

The 26-year-old striker has been a regular starter for the Rams since his summer move from Wigan Athletic where he was starved of first-team opportunities.

He has scored seven goals in 26 starts and his form has caught the eye of Giovanni Trapattoni who has named Sammon in his squad for the friendly against Poland in Dublin on February 6.

His Derby team-mates Richard Keogh and Jeff Hendrick are also in the 27-man squad.

Sammon represented his country at under-21 level and never lost hope of playing international football at senior level.

"Whenever anyone asked me about it before I always said that I need to focus on playing week in, week out at club level to give myself the best chance, and that's what has happened," said Sammon.

"Looking back, it is the best decision I've made moving to Derby.

"I am playing week in, week out and under a manager who has got a lot of belief in me.

"That was always my thinking. If I could get back to playing regularly and get back to enjoying playing and improving as a player, that would give me the best chance of a call-up.

"When I was at Wigan, it was very nice to be able to say I was playing in the Premier League but I was in and out of the team.

"Playing regularly is the only way you are going to improve as a player.

"That was a massive reason for moving, to get more games and settle into a team. I feel I have done that.

"I cannot thank the manager enough, and my team-mates, for helping me.

"I am loving my role in the team at Derby."

Sammon played for UCD and Derry City in the League of Ireland before playing for Kilmarnock and then Wigan.

His last appearance for his country was in an under-21 international five years ago.

He received a text from Derby to inform him of his call-up.

"I was very surprised," said Sammon.

"I had heard that he (Trapattoni) was watching some of our games and I'm just delighted that I have managed to catch his eye, and delighted as well for Jeff and Richard.

"Having three players named in one squad is great recognition for the club and the work that is being done.

"Ever since I came to Derby I have been impressed with the set-up, the manager and the coaching staff."

Republic of Ireland face two World Cup qualifiers in March against Sweden and Austria. Sammon is hoping he and his Derby team-mates, Keogh and Hendrick, can make an impact and stay involved with the national team.

"It's a great opportunity for myself, Richard, Jeff and any of the other boys who have been included for the first time to stake a claim and show what we can do," said Sammon.

"If we can do that, who knows what can happen.

"With the massive games in the qualifying campaign coming up, I'd love to be part of that."

Sammon is one of six strikers in a squad that does not include captain Robbie Keane, who is rested.

"Look at the names – Shane Long, Jonathan Walters, Kevin Doyle, Simon Cox and Andy Keogh – they are all really good players, and they have played international football for many years," said Sammon.

"But I have always had confidence in my own ability.

"The manager has obviously seen something in me to include me in the squad and I am looking forward to linking up with the squad, training with them and hopefully getting a chance to play against Poland."

Keogh, Derby's captain and central defender, says his call-up is a proud moment for him.

"I heard the manager was coming to watch a couple of our games but you still have to concentrate on doing well for Derby," he added.

"To get a call-up, not just for me but also for Jeff and Conor, is a really proud moment.

"I got a text from Clare, the secretary at Derby, and then from the FAI. When I got the text from the FAI it confirmed it because there was still a bit of disbelief.

"Hopefully I can join up with the squad, work really hard and be involved against Poland because it will be a great experience."

Like Sammon, Keogh always hoped the call would come.

"It is something I have always wanted," said the 26-year-old.

"I had played for the under-21s, and when I signed for Derby it (playing for Ireland again) was something I thought might happen.

"I never gave up on that hope.

"I knew if I could play well for Derby and the team was playing well, I would have a better chance.

"But the most important thing is that I keep playing well for Derby and then hopefully I can stay involved in the Irish squad."

Hendrick has represented his country at all the youth levels and has become a key player at under-21 level.

The midfielder says he is delighted to be in the senior squad.

"When you are growing up watching the national team, playing for them one day is something you dream of," said the 20-year-old.

"I am just happy to be involved. I'll work hard and see what happens.

"It was a bit of a shock because I still have about two or three years left with the under-21s.

"My family is delighted for me. The phone has not stopped ringing with people congratulating me."
