Trader register is the key to finding reliable people

CHOOSING a business to work on their house or provide a financial service can be a major headache for people who fear falling prey to dodgy workmen or rip-off merchants.

Derbyshire Trusted Trader scheme, which was set up by Derbyshire County Council in 2007, aims to help you find honest and reliable traders who will commit to doing a good job for a fair price.

And the scheme doesn't just cater for traders offering customers a service for their home, such as plumbers, builders, roofers, decorators, joiners, electricians and gardeners.

You can also find retailers, graphic designers, solicitors, dressmakers, osteopaths, hypnotherapists and psychotherapists among the ranks of registered Trusted Traders.

In fact, there are more than 200 different types of business and service providers whose work has been checked and approved under this popular scheme.

You can search online for the type of trader you need by visiting www.derbyshire .gov.uk. Traders are listed alphabetically – just click on "P" to find a recommended plumber, for instance.

To gauge the breadth of recommended services, clicking on "G" will lead you to graffiti removal, guttering and garden maintenance.

You can also access the register by ringing 08456 058058 8am-8pm on weekdays) and 9.30am-4pm on Saturdays) or visiting your local library.

Northampton vs Burton Albion: Artell back for Cobblers

$

David Artell is set to make his long-awaited return to the Northampton squad when Burton visit Sixfields.

Artell has made a complete recovery from the Achilles injury that has kept him out since the start of October.

The experienced centre-back will provide significant competition for places in a defence that leaked three goals in the opening 25 minutes at Chesterfield last weekend.

However, fellow defender John Johnson, who has also spent several weeks on the sidelines due to a knee injury, will not be considered for selection.

Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd will take a more cautious approach with the full-back, who has had two knee operations this season and whose comeback from the first of those was aborted in November.

"Ideally I would like them both to play in a reserve-team game but at the moment I might have to use the games to get them fit if I need them," said Boothroyd.

"Dave Artell will come into contention for Saturday and be on the bench at least. Johnno is still not quite right yet so we'll take our time with him."

Boothroyd could also opt to freshen up his team with the likes of Ishmel Demontagnac, Lewis Hornby, Lewis Wilson and Louis Moult - all of whom were on the bench for the 3-0 defeat at Chesterfield.

Burton are assessing midfielder Lee Bell and leading scorer Calvin Zola.

Bell came off in injury-time at the end of Albion's 2-1 home win over Torquay last weekend after being on the receiving end of a heavy tackle.

Zola also failed to finish the game - but only after scoring Burton's opening goal in a victory that powered the Brewers back into the npower League Two play-off places.

The big striker suffered a recurrence of a groin strain that had prevented him from training since the FA Cup tie at Leicester on January 5.

Boss Gary Rowett has options should he need to replace either Bell or Zola, or opt to make changes to his starting line-up.

Defenders Aaron Webster and Marcus Holness, midfielders Jack Dyer, John McGrath and Jimmy Phillips and striker Matt Paterson are all vying for recalls.

IT is looking increasingly likely that all local non-League football matches this weekend will be postponed owing to the adverse weather conditions. Borrowash Victoria's fourth round FA Vase clash at home to Berkshire side Ascot United was an early casualty and the tie has provisionally been rescheduled for next Saturday, January 26. Alfreton Town's visit to Telford United was still on as of Friday evening, with Telford saying their pitch was playable and appealing for volunteers to help with snow clearing. Games that were due to involve Ilkeston, Matlock Town, Belper Town, Gresley, Long Eaton United, Holbrook Sports and Graham Street Prims were definitely off yesterday but there was no confirmation either way with regard to Mickleover Sports' home game against Chasetown. Meanwhile, in basketball, Derby Trailblazers' EBL Division One game against Hemel Storm, scheduled to be played at Moorways on Saturday night, has become a victim of the weather. Hemel requested a postponement, believing that travelling up to the county could be too hazardous. The Trailblazers agreed to this and the game will be rescheduled. Trailblazers' Division Three and Division Four games at home at Noel-Baker School tomorrow are also postponed.

DERBY County trail rivals Nottingham Forest 1-0 at half-time in their Championship encounter at Pride Park Stadium. Chris Cohen's goal just after the half-hour mark currently separates the two sides Jamie Ward and Craig Bryson both made their return to the Derby starting line-up. Ward was making his first start since the end of September, when he suffered a torn hamstring - coincidentally against Forest at the City Ground. Bryson, meanwhile, had missing the previous four games due to a knee injury. As a result of the two changes, Ben Davies and Kieron Freeman dropped to the bench. Will Hughes was passed fit to play after being forced out of last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Brighton with a back problem. John Brayford, who was deployed in midfield against Brighton, reverted to his regular position of right-back. Forest boss Alex McLeish made one change to his side, with defender Danny Collins returning from suspension in place of Dan Harding. Derby started brightly and put the visitors under some early pressure. Bryson fired a speculative effort wide and when the midfielder was fouled just outside the area, Ward's free kick was deflected, off the wall, just past the post. Forest responded by carving out two good chances. The first, in the 14th minute, stemmed from Richard Keogh misjudging a high ball down the middle and ended with Simon Cox smashing a shot against the crossbar, with Mark O'Brien eventually clearing the danger. Moments later, Cox was released on the right and his cut-back found the advancing full-back, Gonzalo Jara Reyes, who blazed over from a promising position. At the other end, Forest keeper Karl Darlow had to beat away a deflected Gareth Roberts cross as Conor Sammon prepared to pounce. Then, on the half-hour, Paul Coutts fired wide from a difficult angle after combining with Sammon down the right. Forest went ahead in the 31st minute. Billy Sharp's cross from the right reached Cohen, whose initial volley was miscued but fell kindly for him to side-foot past Adam Legzdins from eight yards. In search of an equaliser, Brayford surged forward and drove a shot wide from outside the box. And just before the interval, Ward curled a 20-yard effort narrowly wide after exchanging passes with Sammon.

THE county will be hit with more snow flurries tomorrow - much to the delight of sledding families in Darley Park. Hundreds took to their sledges to enjoy the snowy hills today and freezing temperatures mean the white stuff is here to stay. Sarah and Steve Branney and their Goldendoodles Lottie and George love coming to Darley Park. Mrs Branney, of Stonemarket Drive, said: "The dogs absolutely love it here, especially when it's snowing. "Our four children are sledding and we're having a wonderful day." The Met Office has said the county will see further flurries of snow that will only be a dusting compared to yesterday. A raw easterly wind will continue to blow in the county into tomorrow and temperatures will struggle to reach above freezing. There will be little chance for the snow to thaw and into tomorrow evening a further one or two centimetres could fall.

JAMIE Ward's second-half strike earned Derby County a 1-1 draw with arch rivals Nottingham Forest. Chris Cohen gave Forest the lead at a packed Pride Park Stadium just after the half-hour. But Ward grabbed an equaliser in the 52nd minute to ensure the match ended all square. Ward and Craig Bryson both made their return to the Derby starting line-up. In search of an equaliser, Brayford surged forward and drove a shot wide from outside the box. And just before the interval, Ward curled a 20-yard effort narrowly wide after exchanging passes with Sammon. Derby were level seven minutes into the second half. Sammon won the ball well midway inside the Forest half and picked out Ward, who coolly finished first-time from 12 yards out. The goal lifted the home side and they almost took the lead immediately when Jeff Hendrick's dipping shot was tipped over by Darlow. Next, O'Brien headed over from a Coutts corner. Forest still looked a threat, though, with Henri Lansbury dragging a shot wide before Cox pulled the ball across the face of goal. With 20 minutes to go, substitute Dexter Blackstock found himself free from a corner but his downward header bounced up and over the bar. As the clock ticked down, the visitors looked the more likely to nick a winner. Derby were indebted to skipper Keogh for a vital clearance from Cohen's dangerous cross. And with six minutes to go, Sharp span on the edge of the area and drilled a low shot inches wide, with Legzdins rooted to the spot. GOALS: Cohen (31) 0-1; Ward (52) 1-1. THE county will be hit with more snow tomorrow and Tuesday. The Met Office has said temperatures this week will rarely reach above freezing. Tomorrow the forecast is for snow showers throughout the day, although they should not be too heavy in the city. But in higher, more rural areas snowfall could reach up to 20 centimetres. The snow will continue in to the early hours of tomorrow Tuesday morning. The snowfall should stop by Thursday. The end of the week will be cloudy and very cold with temperatures not reaching above 1 degree celcius. Today the snow and ice has made little difference to travel in the county. Two train services to Birmingham New Street from Derby were cancelled due to electrical supply problems. Trent Barton has reported running a normal Sunday service on its buses with one exception. The 20 will not be serving Beech Avenue in Beeston Rylands but will use Lilac Grove. Arriva Midlands services in Derby and Burton are running a normal Sunday service.

Draw was a fair result, says Derby County boss Nigel Clough after Nottingham Forest clash

DERBY County manager Nigel Clough felt that Saturday's 1-1 draw with rivals Nottingham Forest was the right outcome, based on the balance of play. The Rams trailed to a Chris Cohen strike at half-time but Jamie Ward, making his first start since the end of September, equalised in the 52nd minute to earn the home side a share of the spoils in front of a packed Pride Park crowd. "It was probably about the right result, although we did press on in the second half after we equalised – so a point is about fair, I think," said Clough. "Despite going a goal down, the players kept doing the right things and our performance overall was pretty good, so we're happy as they gave us everything once again. "Local derbies can sometimes fail to live up to the hype but this was a really good football match between two good sides – and it was more free-flowing than the last few meetings. "With a young and inexperienced side, we were 1-0 down at home in a local derby but the players showed plenty of character to get back level."

UPDATED 12.24: Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has released the following statement: "At 02.39 hours on Sunday, January 20, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to a house fire on Holtlands Drive, Alvaston. "Firefighters from Ascot Drive, Nottingham Road, Kingsway and Ilkeston attended the scene. "A 50-year-old male was rescued from the fire and taken to the Derby Royal Hospital by East Midlands Ambulance Service, but sadly pronounced dead on arrival. "Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to express our sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased. "A joint investigation with Derbyshire Constabulary is currently under-way to establish the cause. "Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is currently campaigning to ensure domestic sprinklers are fitted into all new homes and retro fitted where possible. "Whilst a working smoke alarm gives essential early warning of a fire, a sprinkler system will actually fight the fire and will help to reduce its spread." AS many as 20 fire fighters attended the scene of a fatal house fire in Holtlands Drive, in the early hours of this morning. They rescued the 50-year-old man from his bathroom and he was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and later died. Crews were in attendance at the scene for around five hours. Five suggested travellers sites in Derbyshire Dales rejected

DERBYSHIRE County Council has decided that five potential travellers sites it had earmarked in the Derbyshire Dales are all either unsuitable or unavailable. Its decision to withdraw the five options on land that it owns means that the area's district council will now look at 12 sites it was already in the process of deciding on. The district authority has a legal obligation to identify a traveller site in the area. There are four in Ashbourne, two in Darley Dale, and one in Rowsley, Matlock, Homeford, and Northwood. Those now withdrawn by the county council were in Snelston, Brassington, Wirksworth and Longford, where two were looked at.

UPDATED: East Midlands Airport runway reopens

EAST Midlands Airport is now open after being forced to close earlier today because of the heavy snow fall. The runway is now open after successfully being cleared by staff. All flights appear to be running on time. But the Met Office has predicted a further 2-5cm of snow is expected to fall across Derbyshire by midnight tonight. A spokeswoman said motorists should take care on the roads and to expect icy conditions Two accidents in the Spondon area of the A52 caused gridlock. The first happened on the Nottingham-bound carriageway and resulted in one vehicle facing the wrong way and blocking one lane.

Another happened on the slip road onto the Derby-bound carriageway.

Both incidents are now clear.

Elsewhere, an accident happened along the eastbound carriageway of the A50 near Aston-on-Trent, closing one lane.

Slow traffic built up on the A52 between the Markeaton Lane junction and Markeaton Island due to snow and roadworks.

There was also queuing traffic in both directions along Swarkestone Bridge due to the bad conditions.

Delays were also heavy on the A515 at Fenny Bentley due to a stuck lorry.

A combination of roadworks and snow led to stand-still traffic between Long Eaton and Breaston on the A6005.

Traffic along the A516 from Etwall into Derby was at a "snail's pace".

There were also hazardous driving conditions on St Alkmund's Way in Derby around The Cock Pit traffic lights, because of snow.

Other routes into Derby wereextremely slow, with some motorists saying their usual 15-minute commute into the city took well over an hour this morning.

Meanwhile, East Midlands Airport remains closed due to the bad weather. Passenagers are advised to contact their airline for updates. A spokeswoman said staff were working hard to clear the runways and paths but was unable to say when flights would get underway.

Trent Barton and Arriva said most of its services are running, although passengers are being told to expect delays.

East Midlands Trains has confirmed that services continue to run well, despite the heavy snowfall affecting large parts of the country overnight.

A full timetable is currently operating on all routes.

Managing director David Horne said: "We have put a huge amount of planning into preparing for the bad weather to keep our services running for customers. Our staff are working incredibly hard to keep our trains running and we have extra staff from all areas of our business out clearing snow from station platforms to help keep them safe for passengers.

"We're pleased to have been able to maintain our full timetable throughout the past few days despite some heavy snowfall affecting large parts of our network, and our services are currently running very well.

"We're currently providing a full service on all of our routes, but as with any form of transport, there are times when the severe weather can have an impact on the service we can operate.

"We will continue to monitor the weather conditions throughout the day and would advise passengers to keep an eye on how their local transport services are running.

"We'll be providing up to date information on our website and through Twitter so passengers can easily find the latest service updates before they travel."

Normal ticket restrictions currently apply on all East Midlands Trains services, although discretion may be used if a passenger has been unable to travel on their booked train service due to difficulties experienced whilst travelling to the station.

Mr Horne added: "We do understand that it may take people longer to get to the station due to some treacherous road conditions, and we would advise people to allow extra time for their journey to the station and speak to a member of our staff who can provide assistance with onward travel."

The Derbyshire Dales has been badly affected by the snow, with bin collections cancelled for the day.

A spokesman for the area's district council said: "Some good news is that enough staff have somehow managed to get into our four leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth, so all are open for business, but please be aware that parking could well be a problem.

"Staff at Arc Leisure Matlock have managed to clear the driveway up to the lower pedestrian entrance, but the main car parks are not accessible.

"Our weekly Bakewell stallmarket has been cancelled but the Monday livestock market at our Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell is apparently going ahead as planned.

"
So far as waste & recycling collections go, there's no chance of our crews getting out onto the roads today.

"A supervisor has been out on today's routes and it simply isn't safe to do the collections, so we'll be playing catch-up for the rest of this week. Our advice to residents is please leave your bins out and we'll get to you just as soon as we can."

South Derbyshire District Council also announced its bin collections have been cancelled for today. A spokesman said: "Our refuse and recycling collections have been cancelled today due to the icy conditions. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.

"We will return on your next scheduled collection to pick up any side refuse from your black wheeled bin and any additional recyclables.

"The Civic Offices, as well as our leisure centres in Etwall and Swadlincote, remain open as normal. Take care when travelling."

Treetops services has released details of how the snow is affecting its services. Its website states:

  • Day Care is open to those who can safely get here, but our volunteer drivers are not working today so the majority of guests are not in.
  • Hospice at Home services are working as normal.
  • Bereavement support services are working as normal.
  • The majority of retail, Lottery, fundraising, volunteering services, admin and finance staff are working normally.

Meanwhile, the Strategic Governance Board meeting, to which the public are invited, between the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable, due to be held this afternoon has been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

Amber Valley Borough Council's Planning Board meeting scheduled to take place on Monday 21 January at Ripley Town Hall, has been postponed due to the adverse weather. The meeting has provisionally be re-arranged to take place at 7pm on Monday 28 January 2013.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has also cancelled a planning application committee meeting planned for this afternoon, due to the bad weather.

THE freezing conditions have had a snowball effect on one shopkeeper's trade after he sold more than 300 sledges in three days.

Charlie Greens hardware shop in Chaddesden became a hotspot at the weekend for purchasing the essential item for snowy fun after many bigger stores sold out.

And the Met Office is predicting that people will get plenty of opportunity to use their new sledges, with more snow predicted today and freezing temperatures and more snow in store for the rest of the week.

Tim Green, owner of the Sussex Circus shop, said he sold more than 100 sledges on Saturday alone.

He said: "They're about the best thing we've sold all January. We haven't made lots of money from them but it's just nice to help people out.

"We sold out on Saturday but people kept coming in trying to get one. It was great fun to see the look on kids' faces when they bought them."

Hundreds of people took to their sledges at Darley Park to enjoy the snow this weekend. Among them were Phil, Sarah and Samuel Watson, of Highfield Park Drive, Derby.

Three-year-old Samuel said he was enjoying the snow and mum Sarah, 39, said they enjoy the park all year round.

She said: "We've come down to the park with Samuel every year it has snowed. He seemed a lot braver on his sledge this time, though."

Derby Telegraph picture editor Victoria Wilcox sledging in Darley Park: Dave King, 49, and his dog, Charlie, of St John's Road, said he was woken up early to go to play in the snow.

He said: "It was my wife who woke me up. She was more excited than the kids. Charlie enjoyed himself too."

Tom Boyd, 14, and Jack Robinson, 13, both from Weston-on-Trent, built an igloo made from balls of snow.

Tom said: "It's taking us ages and it's really tiring."

Jack said: "It is either a snowball circle or an igloo, we're not sure what it will end up as."

Steven and Joanne Glenn, along with their children, Matthew, 11, and James, eight, spent hours in the park together. Mrs Glenn said: "It's lovely to spend time together as a family."

Yesterday, snow fell across the county and the Met Office said snow showers would continue today into the early hours of tomorrow, but that they should not be too heavy in the city. However, more rural areas in higher ground could see up to 20cm of snow.

Temperatures will rarely reach above freezing this week but the snowfall should stop by Thursday. The end of the week will be cloudy and very cold with temperatures not reaching above 1C.

Yesterday, the snow caused travel misery across the UK with some train operators running reduced services and Heathrow Airport cancelling 260 flights.

East Midlands Airport was closed at 2.40pm on Friday, but reopened again at 10pm. An airport spokeswoman said flights "ran as normal" for the rest of the weekend.
