ONLY 3.5 overs of play were possible on the first day of Derbyshire County Cricket Club's LV County Championship match against Worcestershire at New Road but that was long enough to put them in a spot of bother. They had to wait until 4.30pm to get going and, after winning the toss, Derbyshire decided to bat. But, off the last ball of the third over, Billy Godleman deflected one off the inside edge that clipped his off stump and he was bowled by Gareth Andrew for three. Five balls later, Stephen Moore went to leave a Charlie Morris delivery well outside off stump and the ball shot back three feet to bowl him for nought. That was 3-2 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul did not even get half way down the pavilion steps as the next man in before the umpires led the players off the field for more rain. Derbyshire recalled spinner David Wainwright for seamer Mark Turner, with Dan Hodgson, the Yorkshire wicketkeeper signed on loan, making his Championship debut. Worcestershire were able to name Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal for the first time and also included former Derbyshire all-rounder Ross Whiteley.
