THE A38 at Ripley has been closed in both directions.
Police say a man climbed onto a bridge at 5.55pm and was threatening to jump.
The incident is at the B6374 Heage Road junction.
A police spokeswoman said trained officers were speaking to the man.
She said a number of motorists had called 999.
