SIGNS are to be put up to warn HGV drivers of a low bridge – but residents say they want lorries off their road altogether.
People living near the bridge in Willowcroft Road, Spondon, say that the route already suffers from heavy traffic and lorries make it worse.
Philip Richardson, 42, who lives near the bridge, said: "Lorries contribute a large amount to the problem because there are so many of them.
"They are constantly hitting the bridge and that closes the road, causing more traffic to back up."
Signs warning HGV drivers to take an alternative route are to be installed by the Highways Agency after Spondon councillors approached them about the situation.
Although a lorry driver himself, Mr Richardson said: "I'm firmly on the side of the residents.
"Life would be 100% better if they did not drive down the road.
"It would mean I would spend a lot less time cleaning my windows because of the fumes they produce."
One of the latest incidents under the A52 bridge in December saw a lorry get jammed beneath it, causing heavy traffic congestion.
Fred Whaley, of Willowcroft Road, said he thought more should be done than the installation of the road signs.
Mr Whaley, 69, who has lived in the street for 30 years, said: "I think it's good news about the signs but a bypass is a better idea because that will divert more traffic away.
"Obviously there are financial reasons why that can't happen.
"It just leaves us with a situation that is hell.
"When a lorry does get stuck, the only thing they can do is try to reverse and that causes more issues."
George Hawksworth said he did not think that the signs would solve the problem.
The 72-year-old, also of Willowcroft Road, said: "They should ban them completely because they are so dangerous.
"They cause chaos and the problem is worse in the village."
Spondon ward councillor Evonne Williams said: "I'm really pleased the signs will go up because there is currently no warning to drivers about the bridge.
"The traffic on the road and the HGV vehicles have been a big concern to residents so hopefully this will help.
"There is currently no funding for a new bypass, but with these signs hopefully we can keep the pressure on."
