AN extra £400,000 needs to be found to rebuild a Derbyshire secondary school after "significant levels" of asbestos were found.
The £7 million rebuilding project at Aldercar Community School is expected to cost the extra £400,000 because of increased demolition costs and significant levels of asbestos which need to be cleared.
The Langley Mill school has some of the worst conditions of any school in the county and these mainly relate to a lightweight timber-frame building "that is past its useful life", according to a Derbyshire County Council report.
On-going repairs, which will continue while work is being carried out over the next two years, are also expected to push up the costs.
The county council has contingency money in cases of emergency and the replacement project at the school is considered suitable for this funding.
