LIVE UPDATES: Brian May's guitar sells for £5,300 in charity auction at Derby's Westfield

THE world record for the longest single auction has been smashed at Derby's Westfield shopping centre. The auction raised a grand total of £57,218. A guitar signed by Queen's Brian May went for £5,300 just before midnight last night and the auction continues today until 6.30pm. The star lot of the whole auction, a brand new Vauxhall Corsa, went for £11,500. TV auctionner James Lewis began the auction at 6.30pm at Westfield shopping centre last night. This morning James is still going strong having gone past the 17 hour mark. The total raised currently stands at £42,515 at 4.25pm. Jeremy Merckel, who is at the event, said: "I'm very confident he will complete the 24 hours because he is in great form. "He's had a couple of short breaks but is really getting back into his stride now. "It's getting busier down there as well. "There are still an awful lot of lots that are going for just a few quid and are perfect Christmas presents - from books, toys, gift set toiletries and ornaments there is something for everyone." More than 2,000 other lots can be bid for online here www.bamfords-auctions.co.uk. Absentee bids can be made at Westfield Derby's concierge desk in advance. Ten charities, including Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Annabel's Angels and the Tiny Tim Trust, will benefit from the auction.

Entry is free and bids can be placed throughout the duration of the auction.
