Handyman's 'rubbish' creation

A HANDYMAN from Derby made the most out of another person's carelessness when he made a bench out of a bed dumped in the street near his home.

David Pearson, of Oriel Court, said he was "sick of the sight" of a bed frame which had been leaning against his garden wall for a week.

His creativity has now been passed on as a gift to his local pub – Baba Jaga, in Burton Road. Mr Pearson said: "It only took me two hours to make and it turned out well. It was incredibly easy to do."

Mr Pearson says his friends call him the Skip Dweller because he is fond of restoring old pieces of furniture.

The 53-year-old said: "I used to love finding old wardrobes and I'd sand them all down and sponge-paint them. I've made all sorts over the years."

Mr Pearson is unemployed after his landscape gardening business was hit hard after the theft of equipment.

He said: "I've turned my hand to lots of things in the past. I've worked in the building trade and making china moulds for Royal Crown Derby.

"The bench was really easy to make – I can put my hand to anything. I'm getting on a bit now, so it would be nice to be able to do more things like this."
