A TEENAGER has received a suspended sentence after admitting theft and possessing an offensive weapon.
Ashley Hudson, 18, of Richmond Road, Derby, admitted both offences when he appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court.
He was handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for a year.
The incident happened at 2pm last Tuesday when a group of friends at Derby's Cathedral Green were approached by Hudson and a youth.
The group got talking and one of the friends, a 17-year-old boy, got out his phone.
Hudson and the youth took it from him and walked off. When the victim asked for his phone back, he alleges that one of the pair pulled a hammer from his bag.
The youth, aged 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear in court charged with the same two offences at a later date.
The charges come as Derbyshire police have launched a month-long amnesty, calling on people to hand in any weapons.
