NEW Zealand ended the second day with a lead of 334 against Derbyshire at the County Ground.
An unbroken stand of 105 for the sixth wicket between BJ Watling (61) and Tom Latham (47) took the Black Caps to 199-5 in their second innings after a fiery start for the Derbyshire bowlers brought them five wickets – all bowled.
Derbyshire were earlier bowled out for 154 in their first innings, with Doug Bracewell taking 4-28 after missing the winter Test series against England through a foot injury. That gave the tourists a first innings lead of 135.
Only Wes Durston, with 46, was able to put a fair score on the board for Derbyshire.
Neil Wagner, who provided the first breakthrough by bowling Chesney Hughes in the final over of the first day, continued an impressive spell by having Billy Godleman caught behind for 14 and then adding the wicket of Wayne Madsen, also caught by Watling, for 12 to make it 52-3.
When Wagner came out of the attack with 3-33, Bracewell took over from the pavilion end and struck twice in successive balls in his first over.
Both were excellent deliveries, with Dan Redfern caught at first slip for 10 and Ross Whiteley especially unfortunate to get one first up that he could only help towards third slip.
But Durston was showing signs that his touch was returning until he danced down the wicket to spinner Bruce Martin and was stumped. His runs came off 65 balls with nine fours.
After lunch, Martin added the wickets of Richard Johnson and Higginbottom to finish with 3-13, then Bracewell returned to bowl Peter Burgoyne and Mark Footitt.
But New Zealand were quickly in trouble at 31-3 in their second innings, with Hamish Rutherford bowled by Footitt for nought, Peter Fulton bowled by Ally Evans for three and Martin Guptill, having been dropped at second slip, bowled by Matt Higginbottom for eight.
Footitt then bowled Dean Brownlie for eight and Kane Williamson was bowled by Burgoyne for 49 but that was the last success for the Derbyshire bowlers.
