MORE details have been revealed about a new railway station for Ilkeston that looks set to win Government funding.
The site earmarked for the station is off Coronation Road, on the existing Erewash Valley railway line, close to the site of the former Ilkeston Junction station.
Now the Department for Transport has revealed further details of the proposed station.
A statement said it would have two platforms, long enough to accommodate trains with up to six passenger carriages, and would have waiting shelters.
A car park would be provided with 150 spaces, including ones for disabled drivers, cycle storage, a drop-off point and a taxi rank. There would also be a bus stop.
The statement reads: "Ramped and stepped access will be provided from the new footbridge to each platform as well as the proposed car park, to the east of the station.
"The station will be unmanned, with automated ticket machines, waiting areas on each platform, customer information screens, passenger help points and CCTV."
Derbyshire County Council put in a bid this month for £4,574,000 from the Government's New Station Fund and, on Tuesday, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin revealed Ilkeston was one of three stations likely to get cash from the £20 million pot, though he did not reveal how much this was likely to be.
Mr McLoughlin said: "These three bids are the front runners and, subject to further development with local communities, will be the first new stations to be built on the network with this fund, delivering real benefits to passengers.
"These projects are good to go and I would expect to see progress on the ground soon after the detailed assessment of these bids has been completed."
Another £1 million is to be put towards the scheme by Nottingham Housing Market Area's Joint Planning Advisory Board, as long as the remaining cash can be found towards the £6,330,000 cost of a new station. The county council has agreed to provide £754,000.
If, as expected, Mr McLoughlin confirms a Government grant in May, the council says that the Ilkeston station could be open by December 2014.
