30% of people in our poll say they'll snub Derbyshire's police chief vote

ALMOST a third of people reacting to a Derby Telegraph poll said they will not be voting at Derbyshire's first Police and Crime Commissioner election.

Some 270 people – 30% of respondents – have so far clicked the "I will not be voting" option on our online poll – a higher figure than have supported any of the four candidates.

As of last night, Labour's Alan Charles was leading the candidates vote with 234 votes, or 26%.

Second was Tory Simon Spencer with 187 votes (21%), followed by independent Rod Hutton, with 108 votes (12%), and UKIPs David Gale, with 93 votes (10%).

The figures come after the Green Party criticised the controversial role, which will see one single elected person replace the existing police authority.

A party spokesman said: "The Green Party will not be participating in this sham and will be urging its supporters not to vote.

"We remain committed to proper accountability and control of the police but that can be achieved through directly elected police boards or by extending the influence of local councils.

"It will not be achieved by the imposition of police commissioner whom the public do not understand, want or can afford to pay for."

More than 700,000 people will be eligible to vote for the county's first commissioner when the public go to the polls on November 15.

Whoever takes up the £75,000-a-year role will set the force budget and be able to hire and fire the Chief Constable.

Mr Spencer said: "I think it is quite irresponsible to encourage people not to vote.

"Whether they like it or not, a commissioner will be in place by the middle of November and if people care about their police force delivering and having their views put across, then they should vote."

Mr Gale said: "Whatever anyone's opinion of the merits of having a commissioner, we live in a democracy that relies upon people taking part.

"Not taking part means that you give up on democratic rights that people have fought and died for."

Mr Hutton, the only independent candidate for the role, said: "I believe it is unfortunate that the Green Party are not encouraging their supporters to engage with what is now a very inevitable election process.

"Not engaging with this process denies their members a coordinated voice in what matters to them.

"They, however, are right to be concerned about the publicity of this campaign and this has resulted in a lot of apathy that all political parties and independents are suffering from."

Mr Charles said while he agreed with the Green Party's assessment of the process, he felt it was vital people voted.

He said: "I agree that the whole thing has been exceptionally poorly organised but the Government have pushed this though and it is going ahead.

"If people do not vote then the danger is they are going to end up with someone responsible for policing Derbyshire they do not want."

Derby-born rugby star Jonathan Joseph's eyes on Twickenham showdown

RISING rugby union star Jonathan Joseph says it would be a "dream come true" to play his first competitive international at Twickenham.

The Derby-born centre is hoping to be part of the England team to face Fiji a week on Saturday – if he can shake off an injury in time.

The Fiji game is a curtain-raiser for showdowns against the three sides ranked above them in the world – Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

Joseph injured his ankle playing for London Irish in Sunday's Aviva Premiership clash with Harlequins.

The former Derby RFC junior sat out training at the newly-opened St George's Park near Burton yesterday – but is upbeat about his prospects.

"I've just got to do what I can to get it right in time for next week," said the 21-year-old.

"As long as I'm right, there's no reason why it should hinder my performance.

"I'm working hard to get it right and I should be fine."

England head coach Stuart Lancaster added: "He will struggle to train until early next week, so we will see how it goes.

"It will be a tight turnaround for Fiji. We're optimistic but realistic as well."

Joseph's first appearance in a senior England shirt was at Twickenham in May against the Barbarians, scoring two tries, but that was not classed as a competitive fixture. He made his Test debut on the summer tour of South Africa and featured in all three games against the Springboks.

"For me personally, it would be a dream come true to play in front of the home crowd," said Joseph.

"I had a nice taster against the Barbarians but Test rugby is much different and not as open!"

Fitness permitting, Joseph – who has been compared to former England ace Jeremy Guscott – is keen to tie down a regular place in Lancaster's side.

"Everyone in the squad wants to cement their place in the side," he said.

"There is good competition and it's just who is in form at the right time and what the coaches want to go with.

"It is exciting times and I'm still young. I've got years ahead of me but it would be really good to start pushing for a run in the side now.

"There are a lot of good players at international level. You've just got to focus on yourself and improving your game.

"Then it's down to coaches the team they want to play and the back line they want to go with. I've just got to do the best I can."

Lancaster yesterday confirmed Chris Robshaw of Harlequins as captain for the Autumn internationals.

Meanwhile, nine players were last night released back to their clubs under the RFU's Elite Player Squad agreement with Premiership Rugby – Anthony Allen (Leicester Tigers), Mike Brown (Harlequins), Phil Dowson (Northampton), Ben Morgan (Gloucester), Dylan Hartley (Northampton), James Haskell (Wasps), Courtney Lawes (Northampton), Jordan Turner-Hall (Harlequins) and Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers).

Hartley and Lawes will receive further treatment for knee injuries at Northampton, while the others will be available to play in the Premiership this weekend.

Late call-ups Matt Mullan (Worcester) and George Robson (Harlequins) were due to train with the England squad today before returning to their clubs.

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD Billy Willis, from Derby, has been chosen to be an England mascot for the match against South Africa on November 24.

As well as running out with the team, Billy has also been invited to watch the squad train at their Pennyhill Park base in Surrey on Monday.

Mum backs Save a Life campaign to find 500 more blood donors in Derbyshire

A MUM who suffered a miscarriage and heart attack says she and her five-year-old son would not be alive today without the kindness of blood donors.

Now Charlotte Gray is backing the Derby Telegraph's new Save a Life campaign to find 500 more donors in Derbyshire.

The 39-year-old needed two pints of blood when she lost her first child and another two after she underwent a double coronary bypass.

When her son, Samuel, was born with a heart defect in 2007, he also needed two blood transfusions after developing an infection and having open-heart surgery.

Charlotte, of Mickleover, said it was amazing that such a simple thing as giving blood could save so many lives.

That is why the Derby Telegraph is asking the people of Derbyshire to do their bit and save a life by giving blood.

Asking readers to learn first aid and sign up to the national organ donor register will also form part of our campaign.

Charlotte said: "Saying thank you just doesn't seem enough when it comes to blood donors – they don't get to see what happens to their blood but they know just what a massive difference it makes."

Derby County's Lee Croft: Racism accusations the lowest point of my career

LEE Croft has described accusations of racial abuse made against him as the lowest point of his career.

The Derby County winger, who is on a season-long loan at Oldham Athletic, was cleared by South Yorkshire Police last week following claims he racially abused a ball boy during Oldham's 1-1 draw at Sheffield United.

Croft admitted it was wrong to swear at the ball boy but he was horrified to hear of the accusation levelled at him.

"It has been the lowest point of my career," said the 27-year-old.

"It is one of the worst things you can be accused of and it hasn't been nice for my family and friends.

"When I got called in by the police after the game and told I had been accused of racist abuse, I couldn't believe it.

"It took a while to sink in. It was a complete surprise because I didn't say anything.

"There was no accusation whatsoever from the ball boy of racist abuse and there was no evidence to support the claims of the Sheffield United fans.

"I always knew I hadn't done it.

"My family and friends know I would never say anything like that.

"I knew I was innocent but there is always that doubt that people get the wrong impression.

"I'm just glad it's over and I can put it all behind me."

Croft said he had suffered threats and abuse since the racism claims were made against him.

"I've had a few threats – people saying they hope I break my leg and they'd love to bump into me in the street and see if I'd say it to them," he added.

"People who don't know me think I'm a racist. I couldn't be anything further from that."

A TEENAGER has appeared in court after he was caught riding an off-road bike in Ilkeston. Officers were called to the Abbotsfield Community Centre playing field in July. They caught the teenager driving at speed on the playing field where he also drove his bike directly at an officer and escaped on a footpath. Police caught and arrested the 17-year-old later in the day and seized his bike. He has now appeared at South Derbyshire Magistrates and was fined £50 for driving without due care, costs of £85 to the court and a £15 victim surcharge. His licence was endorsed with six points and his bike disposed of. PC Andy Kendal-Edwards from the Cotmanhay team said: "We have had a number of issues with off road bikes in this area. "It really helps our local officers if a description is given of these individuals and the bike they are riding, along with times and location.
