A 62-YEAR-OLD woman remained in hospital in "a critical condition" last night after she was in collision with a van as she walked across a road in Derby.
The woman suffered serious head injuries in the collision at the junction of Bass Street and Peel Street.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the accident at 4.25pm on Wednesday.
Peel Street was cordoned off for four hours while investigation teams examined the scene.
A police spokesman said: "A Citroen Relay van and the woman collided at around 4.25pm on Wednesday, December 19, in Peel Street at the junction with Bass Street.
"She suffered serious head injuries and she remains in hospital in a serious condition."
Jason Lowton, 26, a joiner, of Peel Street, said he noticed the road was closed when he came home from work at 4.45pm.
He said: "As I drove up Peel Street, I saw the flashing lights at the top end of the road.
"The police would not tell us anything but there was a long white plumber's van that was across the road.
"It looked like it had come down Bass Street and was turning right into Peel Street."
"There were probably three or four police cars there and it was gone 8pm by the time they opened the top end of Peel Street to traffic."
Keith Henderson, 55, a shop worker, also of Peel Street, went to see what had happened when he arrived home from work at 5pm.
He said: "I could see a man sitting in a police car talking to a police officer.
"The van was a plumber's van parked across the road. I could see officers examining the scene."
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
