THE St Peters Quarter is the city's second Business Improvement District and aims to provide an alternative and complementary shopping, leisure and commercial area to Westfield and the Cathedral Quarter.

Its businesses have invested in new Christmas lights this year to bring a real festive feel to local streets.

These include streets not previously dusted with Christmas magic, such as East Street and Albion Street, in addition to the lights erected for the first time last year at the top of Osmaston Road, Green Lane, The Spot, St Peters Street and St Peters Church graveyard.

Everything is at hand for visitors to the St Peters Quarter, from the latest fashions to something for the home and great meals out – all within easy reach by foot, car or bus and with cashpoints and other banking services close by.

Stroll along pedestrianised streets or nip into your favourite shops to bag that ideal gift during your lunch hour.

Niche independent stores – particularly in Babington Lane, Green Lane, Osmaston Road and The Spot – attract customers from all over the region and many have been part of the city's shopping experience for generations.

Well-known names include the long-standing Reliance Electrical, Jillian Hart, and Hunters furniture store, all in Babington Lane.

Green Lane continues to attract new businesses, recent arrivals including Eliza Leren designer fashion and Cape & Cowl, specialists in everything related to comic book heroes, which sit alongside popular stores such as Only Joking, Shooz4 Kidz and Kezia.

The Spot and Osmaston Road is another area full of independent stores, including musical instrument retailer Rattle and Drum, which draws customers from all over the region and beyond.

There is also a wealth of popular high street shops, many of which are not available elsewhere in the city, ensuring that St Peters Street and East Street are always bustling with shoppers.

Head to Waterstone's for the latest books or Body Shop for a wide range of cosmetics and toiletries, while the Co-op department store in East Street has something for everyone under one roof.

Visit Albion Street and children will marvel at the magical world of Disney, while latest fashions are available at the nearby Gap Outlet.

Markets have been at the heart of Derby's retail scene for more than 700 years and the iconic Eagle Market represents everything that is great about the high street – expert knowledge, friendly customer service and excellent value for money.

The market celebrated its 20th anniversary in its existing home this year and has a fantastic range of businesses for gift-hunters and "foodies" alike, with stallholders specialising in everything from jewellery and gifts from around the world to fruit and vegetables and delicatessen treats.
