Residents in Egginton, Derbyshire, unexpectedly found themselves trapped in their own village following floods resulting from Saturday night's heavy rain.
Rising water left roads to the village impassable to all but high vehicles and tractors after the Egginton Brook, combined with water from the nearby Dove and Trent rivers, overflowed into surrounding areas on Sunday morning.
No properties are thought to have been flooded but roads and fields were, at one point, under several feet of water.
Resident Hayden Smedley said: "The water was high yesterday, but literally came up over an hour or two this morning.
"By 9 or 10 o'clock the village was completely cut off."
He said he thought a lot of the water had worked its way down the river from Dovedale.
Villagers with 4x4s and trailers helped ferry other residents through the flood as many of them had left their cars in nearby roads.
Some were also forced to move animals and livestock to safety.
Nikki Lawton, who lives just outside the flooded area, said: "I am a bit concerned for the animals.
"We've moved our Welsh pony, Clive, from a waterlogged field and nearer to the house. I now have to go and rescue two sheep."
The water is expected to recede overnight.
It is the second time this year the village has been severely affected by flooding.
