AN Indian restaurant in Derby claims it will be the only one in the city delivering meals on Christmas Day.

Curry Art, in Ridge Way, Chellaston, has decided to remain open for business on the big day, delivering Indian cuisine as well as traditional turkey dinners.

It is the first time the restaurant, which opened six years ago, has decided to open on December 25.

Owner Abdul Muhit said the decision was taken following feedback from customers.

He said: "They asked whether we would consider opening on Christmas Day.

"Some people do not want the hassle of having to cook and do all the washing up. Instead, we will deliver their food to them, so they can sit back, relax and enjoy the day."

But Curry Art may not be the only Indian restaurant that is opening its doors this Christmas.

Anoki, which has outlets in London Road, Derby, and on the A38, near Burton, is also considering opening on December 25.

Owner Nav Khaliq said: "Trends are changing and most Indian restaurants are now opening on Christmas Day. Anoki gets a huge number of inquiries for Christmas Day bookings and we are currently considering opening this year.

"It is a sign of the times that people really want to treat themselves at Christmas after a hard year and don't want to spend all day cooking and cleaning up."

Last year, fast food giant McDonald's decided to open its Osmaston Park Road branch on Christmas Day.

The decision was met with a mixed reaction from church leaders.

This year, however, McDonalds has taken the decision not to open any outlets on December 25.

Other takeaways in the city said they were still to decide their Christmas opening times.

And while Christmas takeaway meals may not be palatable with many in the Christian faith, BJ Facey, vicar at St Peter's Church in Chellaston, said people had to consider the faith of those running the business.

She said: "I wouldn't agree with opening on December 25 but while I would say Christians hold fast Christmas Day, you can't force it on other religions.

"There are many shops which are not run by people of the Christian faith who open on the day."
