WESTFIELD Derby has been ranked one of the most attractive shopping centres in the country.

The city's shopping mall came 12th out of 500 centres across Britain in Trevor Wood Associates' latest edition of Going Shopping – the Definitive Guide to Shopping Centres.

The report ranks Britain's top 500 shopping centres on their overall attractiveness to customers, based on factors including their size, tenants and weekly footfall.

Last year, Westfield Derby was ranked 11th. The report states that the slip is partly due to the opening of Westfield's new Stratford City shopping centre, in London.

It also states that the centre had suffered in the face of tough retail conditions.

Other centres in the East Midlands in the report include Highcross Leicester, which fell one place to 18th; the Victoria Centre in Nottingham, which fell one place to 28th; and Broadmarsh, also in Nottingham, which dropped from 89th to 109th.

Across the whole of the UK, the research showed how the recession was having a big impact on shopping centres.

High street chemist Boots is now rated as the leading tenant in UK shopping centres, climbing from third in the table and replacing Clinton Cards.
