A WORLD champion freerunner from Derby has been filmed balancing on a rooftop high above London for an anti-animal-cruelty charity video.

Tim Shieff is the latest athlete to team up with People's Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, to promote the benefits of veganism.

Boxer David Haye and Germany's strongest man, Patrik Baboumian, have also starred in videos for the organisation.

During his short video, which can be watched here 27-year-old Tim can also be seen sprinting, somersaulting, sliding, jumping and climbing his way across the capital.

The video ends with the strapline "Do More Than Survive. Thrive. Choose Vegan".

The former Landau Forte College pupil, who is originally from Littleover, said: "I'm now two-and-a-half years in veganism and I'm happier and healthier than I've been before and no animals are getting messed with.

"Going vegan, I noticed an improvement with my joint recovery.

"Freerunning is quite a strenuous activity, with a lot of impact on the joints and bones.

"When I went vegan, I noticed I could train more frequently day after day and not feel the same strains and impacts."

Tim used to live in Field Close, but is now based in London.

He is known as Livewire on the freerunning circuit and he has appeared in TV adverts as well as performed on stage at the Mobo Awards alongside Professor Green and Jessie J.

He decided to try freerunning after watching a Channel 4 TV documentary called Jump Britain in 2005.

After researching the sport, he found a freerunner living in Nottingham and began training with him.

Since then, he has spent hours perfecting his technique, using the city of Derby as his training ground.

In 2007, he went professional and secured sponsorship with Adidas.

Talking about his vegan diet, Tim said: "Anything with sweet potato in is my staple food.

"I believe strongly as an athlete you need to live a high-carbohydrate, low-fat vegan lifestyle for optimum health and sweet potatoes really give me those carbohydrates and nutrients that I need, that I crave and that make me feel good. I enjoy it as well and you can use it in so many different recipes."

Tim became the World Champion freerunner, also known as Parkour, in 2009 when he beat 25 other athletes to the trophy.

The discipline involves carrying out gymnastic movements, such as handstands and back-flips, but using everyday surroundings as part of the display.

But his activities have almost landed him in hot water over the years he has been doing it.

In 2010 he received a letter from Derby Community Safety Partnership warning him that if he did not stop using Littleover Community School as part of his training regime further action would be taken.

And in 2013 Superintendent Gary Parkin, of Derbyshire Police, criticised an online video that showed Tim and his friends teetering along city centre rooftops in Derby.

The four-minute video showed a death-defying run starting above the car park at Bennetts department store before filming them running and climbing at speed down narrow ledges above Iron Gate and then on to the roof of the Assembly Rooms, finishing in its car park.

Tim said he felt passionately about choosing a plat-based diet. He said: "I don't think it is hard for any human that lives compassionately to relate to the death and the torture that has gone into the production of meat and dairy and once you connect with that it is not a hard decision to go vegan."
