THE COOL temperatures this month are going to continue, according to forecasters.

The chance of frost looks likely this week and follows several flood and thunder warnings already issued this month.

A spokesman for the Met Office said conditions were going through a period of "unseasonably cool" weather.

She said: "There is an area of low pressure in the North Sea which is coming down making it cooler.

"Everyone will feel the cold a lot more. Today will see temperatures of 15 and 16C, which is very cool for this time of the year. That will be the case for most parts as conditions will feel a little bit blustery.

"Overnight temperatures will be 9C. On Wednesday it will feel quite a bit warmer as it reaches 16C.

"It's not unusual to get this weather in August. The official start of autumn is September 1 so we are only two weeks away."

Burton forecaster Paul Carfoot predicted that the planet will get cooler over the next 40 to 50 years.

He said the county has already experienced around 60mm of rain, with the average for the month being 49.9C.

He said: "We could even get a touch of ground frost which is unusual for this time of the year. Normally that is in September, so we are a month in advance.

"There has always been climate change but I believe we are going through a cooler phase of low sun-spot activity.

"Temperatures over the last 18 years have been static but now I think we are at a turning point."

Mr Carfoot said the average temperature for August is 16.4C, and so far this year it is 16.1C.

Mark Smith, manager of Swarkestone Nursery, and Derby Telegraph gardening columnist, said the threat of a frost could be a nightmare for gardeners.

He said: "Any heavy rain has the real potential to damage flowers and could really knock them about. However, on the positive side, it is great for lawns because it will make them thick.

"A frost could finish off the summer bedding and any hanging baskets. It's a bad time because things look very good."
