PEOPLE who live near Chester Green have told of their concerns after travellers moved onto the field for the first time in 15 years. A total of 10 caravans and 11 cars are now set up on the site. When the Derby Telegraph approached the travellers this morning they were told to leave, but an older man said he intended to stay there for "as long as he could". The group started to move onto Chester Green at 7.45pm yesterday. Marie Meehan, 64, who lives nearby, said it was the first time travellers had set up at the site for 20 years. She said: "I've lived in the area for 20 years and this is the first time in 15 or 16 years. "It's caused a lot of concern among people here. Last night there were about 40 of us outside discussing it and the police came to speak with us. "It's things like you don't know where they are going to the toilet." She said another concern was that a charity event, the Big Toddle, is supposed to take place to raise cash for Barnardos, at the park on Monday morning. Another near-neighbour to the camp, Beth Shinton, 28, said it "looked awful". She said: "The police have told us they might be good neighbours, they might be bad. "But it's one rule for one and another for everyone else. "If someone put a tent up on the green they'd be told to take it down straightaway." It is believed to be the same group of travellers that had previously been on a field in Spondon.
