MOTORISTS have been experiencing more delays as the effect of roadworks continue to plague commuting journeys into Derby.
Work at Markeaton Island to increase lane capacity is not expected to finish until mid-October and city centre workers have already experienced difficulties.
The controversial work at the Little Eaton Island is due to be completed at the end of August.
City-centre worker Tracey Bricknell experienced issues yesterday because of the changes to the Markeaton Island.
The 50-year-old, of Findern, has to come through the island on her commute.
She said: "I travelled yesterday and there were queues all of the way down with stop and start traffic.
"It usually takes me ten minutes into work but now it's 40. It's a nightmare.
"It's my bugbear as a driver because I'm forever stuck in traffic.
"These delays have just become a way of life in Derby, just sitting in roadworks. It will be even more of a nightmare when everybody is back at school."
Work will involve widening the approaches and lanes on the island as well as updating traffic lights.
The agency says the work will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm and 8pm and 6am, when there is less traffic on the road.
During this time, there will be lane closures and speed restrictions.
Ms Bricknell said: "I normally come into work early and then leave late just to avoid the traffic. It adds insult to injury."
Project manager Kevin Harvey previously said the aim was to create minimal disruption.
He said: "Starting the Markeaton scheme now means the initial stages of the work can be done over the school summer holidays. We're doing the work as quickly as possible to reduce disruption.
"By increasing lane capacity, more vehicles will be able to use the roundabout, improving traffic flow and journey times. This will help reduce congestion."
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "We are aware of traffic flows on the A38 and are monitoring delays, so that we're able to adjust our work to minimise disruption.
"In the long term, by increasing lane capacity, more vehicles will be able to access and exit the roundabout, improving traffic flow and journey times."
Drainage work has started in Alvaston which will cause "some disruption", Councillor Paul Bayliss has warned.
The work is being carried out at the A5111 and A6 roundabout to help reduce the flooding risk at Alvaston District Centre.
And motorists are being warned to use alternative routes while the work is being carried out.
