Derby County hero Paulo Wanchope hopes Costa Rica can "keep surprising the world" in Brazil. The Costa Ricans claimed a shock 3-1 win against Uruguay in their World Cup Group D opener. Today, they take on Italy at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife (5pm UK time), ahead of a showdown with England. Former Rams striker Wanchope is currently Costa Rica's assistant coach. "When we beat Uruguay, it was a big surprise for many people," he said. "For us, it wasn't a surprise because we know the great talent that we have. "We were ready and we are having a great time." The performance against Uruguay was met by scenes of wild celebrations back in Costa Rica. "Football is the first sport in Costa Rica – it is a big influence for the young people," said Wanchope. "There was a big party when we won that game against Uruguay. We have seen the pictures. Everyone was on the streets celebrating. No one expected it. "We will do our best to qualify. We will keep working and keep surprising the world." Wanchope believes the team are well capable of causing problems for Italy and England. "I always said that we are capable of scoring against any team," he added. "The only concern is how well we will keep the defensive discipline. "That's the only thing we need to concentrate on now against the Italians and England."
