STEPHEN Moore hit his first century for Derbyshire as they recovered from an early setback to build a good response to Hampshire's first innings 328 all out on the second day of their LV County Championship match at the 3aaa County Ground. They lost opener Billy Godleman in the third over of their innings but Moore was 106 not out at the close from a total of 203-2. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is 35 not out overnight and the pair have put on 93 so far. Godleman was lbw to James Tomlinson for one to provide early concern for the home side at 4-1 but second-wicket pair Moore and Wayne Madsen proved there was nothing to fear about the strip. Madsen was out for 36, stumped after dancing down the wicket to the spin of Liam Dawson at 110-2. The partnership was worth 106. But Moore and Chanderpaul took up the momentum and the opener completed his first Championship ton in two and a half years with his 14th four. He had also hit one six and faced 178 balls. Derbyshire were hoping to wrap up the Hampshire innings quickly with the second new ball in the morning but it did not work out that way. They did remove night watchman Kyle Abbott with the sixth ball of the day, as he was bowled driving at Mark Footitt for nought with the total still on the overnight 231. Derbyshire did not have to wait long for the seventh wicket, either, as Sean Ervine drove at Tim Groenewald and was caught by wicketkeeper Richard Johnson for six. That was 248-7 and an encouraging start to the day for the home side. But they were to regret the dropped chance on the first day when Joe Gatting was 14 as he and Michael Bates pushed on. They added 59 for the eighth wicket before Gatting, who greeted Wes Durston to the attack by hitting him for six to long on, went to repeat the shot and was caught by Chesney Hughes. He made a very good 67, off 130 balls with six fours and that six, with the score 307-8. Derbyshire needed only 15 balls after lunch to wrap up the Hampshire innings, as Michael Coles was bowled by Footitt for nine and Bates was caught at deep midwicket by Moore for 31 sweeping Durston. Groenewald (27-12-57-2) was the pick of the Derbyshire bowling, with Footitt 3-71 and Durston 2-41.
