PROMISING club racer and former soldier Ian Allkins has been killed during a race at Donington Park over the weekend.
Tributes for the fledgling rider, who lived at Oakwood, have come in from all areas of the sport.
A lap of honour was held for him yesterday - the second day of the racing cirucit's Thundersport weekend.
Former soldier Ian hit the headlines in 2012 when he achieved his racing licence despite only having one eye and he set about contesting the Thundersport 500 championship.
Recently he told the Derby Telegraph that his aim for his second season this year would be to finish in the top eight.
Kirk Rothwell, spokesman for Donington Park said: "We cannot say much about the accident because it is now in the hands of the Auto Cycle Union who are investigating.
"Ian was a dear friend of many people at Donington Park, where he had also been a regular marshall, and so it is a terrible shock to many people."
