ADAM Peaty claimed a second silver medal and another Commonwealth Games qualification time at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Glasgow. But there was heartbreak for Molly Renshaw in her bid to earn herself an automatic slot in the England team for July's main event. City of Derby star Peaty maintained his brilliant form at the Tollcross pool. Having already achieved the qualification time for the 200m breaststroke by finishing second to Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson last week, he went into the final of the 100m event as fastest qualifier. But in a thrilling race, he was beaten on the touch by Scotland's Ross Murdoch, who led from the start as Peaty hunted him down in the final few metres. The 19-year-old from Uttoxeter clocked 59.79 seconds – just 0.23 behind Murdoch but 0.01 inside the qualification time. Chris Steeples, from Church Broughton, who now swims with Mancheter Aquatics was the sixth-placed finisher in 1.01.36. However, while Peaty is a virtual certainty for to make a reappearance at the Games, Ripley's Renshaw will have to wait to discover her fate when the England selectors meet to finalise the team. She was on the receiving end of an epic swim by Sophie Taylor from the City Leeds club and had to make do with a silver medal. The 17-year-old, who now trains at British Swimming's National Performance Centre at Loughborough University, also had her recently-established English record snatched away from her, even though she recorded a big personal best. Taylor, known mainly as a sprinter, set a remarkable pace early in the race and although Renshaw was closing the gap over the last length, she was unable to overhaul her rival from the Yorkshire club. Taylor hit the wall in 2.24.46 – inside the "nomination" time of 2.24.92 and close to Kirsty Balfour's British record – with Renshaw clocking 2.25.10. ahead of City of Derby's Danielle Lowe (2.28.28). Derventio eXcel's Abbie Woodw also made the final, finishing seventh in 2.30.67 to record her second European Junior Championships qualifying time of the week. Her club-mate Kevin Wallbank made it through to two juniors finals, claiming bronze in the 200m butterfly and finishing fifth in the 100 breaststroke, while City of Derby's Ellie Baldwin landed third place in the junior 100m backstroke.
