A number of houses had to be evacuated after a suspicious package was found in Church Lane, Calow.
Bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion of the device which was recovered for forensic examination.
A number of houses were evacuated as a precaution and an evacuation centre was set up at Calow Primary School.
The incident happened at 9.35pm on Friday.
Residents were allowed back to their homes the next day after the device had been made safe.
A 40-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of producing an explosive and were released on police bail pending further enquiries.
