THE mother of tragic Kadeem Blackwood fought back tears in court today as her statement of evidence was read out to a jury.
Nottingham Crown Court is hearing the retrial, for murder, of Michael-Paul Hamblett-Sewell.
He is charged with the murder of Kadeem, who died in November 2008 at the age of 15.
Supported by Maria Needs, a Derbyshire Police family liaison officer, Helen Smith had to hear the words she gave to officers that dated back more than five years.
Read out by Sarah Knight, prosecuting, Miss Smith told how Kadeem had lived partly with her in Blagreaves Lane, Littleover, and partly with his father, Stephen Blackwood, in Chellaston.
Hamblett-Sewell is accused of being a party to, being behind or ordering the shooting of Kadeem Blackwood at Caxton Park, Sunny Hill, Derby, in November 2008.
Callum Campbell, who was 19 at the time, has already admitted to being the gunman.
This morning prosecutor Peter Joyce QC outlined the case to jurors.
Kadeem attended Chellaston School where he enjoyed sports including rugby and basketball, but had been excluded from school after his work suffered.
In her statement, Miss Smith said she tried to get Kadeem into Littleover School but was not successful.
She said: "Kadeem felt let down by his father and his behaviour deteriorated.
"He became angry, abusive and aggressive, causing damage to then house.
"He was angry with everything and everyone."
Miss Smith said Kadeem became known to the youth offending service and was sent to a secure unit in early 2008.
She said he became a member of the Younger Browning Circle Terrorists and that she believed his involvement started when he lived with his father in Chellaston.
Two days before his death, Miss Smith said she heard her son on his mobile phone.
She said: "I heard him say 'who'd this blood? I heard you got beat up by a 14-year-old Chad lad'.
"He was angry and agitated.
"Every time he heard a noise he shouted to me 'what's that noise mum?'
The following day, November 10, 2008, Miss Smith said she heard Kadeem on the phone again the same night.
She said: "I heard Kadeem say to someone on the phone 'you've got a strap (a gun)?
"He said 'are you mad?' I don't know who he was talking to."
On the day of his death, Miss Smith said she woke at 7am, went to the hairdresser's and returned home at 5pm.
She said Kadeem and two friends left the house at 6pm and at 9pm she went to watch TV in bed.
Ms Smith said: "I heard Chante (Kadeem's sister) scream.
"She ran into my room and said 'Kadeem's been shot' she was still on the phone.
"I took the phone off her and said to whoever was on the other end 'don't mess about this is his mum' and the girl said 'he's been shot you need to get to the DRI straight away, I am not lying'.
Miss Smith said she went to the hospital where she identified her son's body.
