WORK could start next year on a new Aldi supermarket in Alvaston, creating 30 jobs.

The new store would be built on wasteland off Coleman Street, if a planning application, now submitted by the firm, was successful.

People in the area have largely welcomed the scheme, which would include a car park with 96 spaces.

Janet Teft, 60, of Coleman Street, said the wasteland was a dumping ground for fly-tippers and home to "troublesome foxes" – issues she hoped would come to an end if the store was built.

She said: "It's just a dumping ground. They put a big gate up but people just leave rubbish outside or throw it over. The foxes get everywhere."

Neighbour John Bulmer, 76, said he was thinking of selling his car, so a closer supermarket would be good news.

He said: "You can already get all your groceries from other shops nearby.

"But this place would be fantastic because it would be so convenient."

Paul Gashill, 62, also of Coleman Street, said the new jobs would be good news for the area but that he had concerns about a possible detrimental effect on house prices.

He said: "We're looking to move soon and you don't know what difference it could make.

"Traffic and noise could be an issue but it's whether house prices could drop just through it being there."

An Aldi spokesman said the firm was hoping to start building work next year.

He added: "We have submitted plans for a new store in Alvaston with a retail area of 1,125 square metres. We expect to create up to 30 full and part-time jobs.

"We believe there is a lot of local support for a discount food retailer in Alvaston and want to provide residents with exceptional quality products at affordable prices.

"At this stage in the process, we are not currently in a position to say when the store is expected to open."

The planning application states that access to the store should be from Coleman Street and not Harvey Road.

It states this was "due to the proximity of the fuel filling station, pedestrian crossing and road junction".

There would be footpath access from Harvey Road.

A public consultation on the plans will finish on Monday, with a decision on the application expected by November 18.
