THE head of the region's ambulance service has left after nearly two years in charge.

Phil Milligan joined East Midlands Ambulance Service in December 2011 and was behind radical plans to shake up the trust after years of "poor performance".

His "Being the Best" proposals, which included closing and replacing ambulance stations, were approved in March.

As a result, Mr Milligan said he was leaving EMAS in a "much stronger position".

He said: "I am looking forward to spending more time with my family – the role of chief executive has been very demanding and has required very long hours to make the progress necessary."

EMAS director of finance and performance Jon Sargeant will take over until a successor is appointed.

Chairman Jon Towler said: "He leaves EMAS in a considerably better shape."

Unison spokesman Wayne Rowland said: "It seems a bit odd, given the changes the trust's going through, but it's hard to say more as we don't know any of the details."
