A FAMILY has been left homeless after a neighbour's car – with two young children inside – smashed into their house.

The drama happened when a Volkswagen Touran rolled across the road from a neighbouring house, almost smashing through a wall and into the family's kitchen.

The car was left in position for several hours, with fire crews reluctant to move it because of fears of causing further structural damage.

There were also concerns that the accident could have caused a gas leak, with the crash causing damage to pipes and a boiler.

Two children were also in the house, in Woodyard Close, Castle Gresley, at the time of yesterday's incident, but nobody was injured.

The house has been declared unsafe for the family to live in for the time being.

The owner of the car is thought to have left the handbrake off.

Mark O'Shea, his partner, Rebecca Smith and her two children, 11 and 12, have been forced to find alternative accommodation after being told their house, which was only built seven years ago, was currently unsafe.

Part of it will need to be rebuilt before they can move back in.

Mr O'Shea said he did not know where his family were going to live.

He said: "The children were in but luckily they weren't in the kitchen. All of a sudden they heard a big bang.

"We ran into the kitchen and saw it had caved in. The electric has been cut off and they're going to have to take out the whole corner and rebuild it .

"But the main thing is that everyone is all right."
