GRANT Merritt was too hot for the opposition in an open match on lake two at Makins Fishery.

As temperatures soared, Merritt kept his cool to claim top spot with a storming run in the final two hours.

Sat at peg B19, he fished pellet waggler and banked 133lb 4oz to win.

Long Eaton's John Adamson was second with 80lb at peg B22.

He caught nothing for the first two hours and then switched to pole, with quick results.

His second-place net included three carp and 20 bream.

Ben Lockwood was third at peg A8 with 75lb of carp which he caught on pellet, presented on the bomb.

Mark Melhuish edged clear in the open match on the Avon and Derwent.

He fished corn to the island to catch in the early stages and then switched to the margins to keep the carp coming.

His 79lb 4oz net was enough to to win by 12 ounces.

Lee Westwood was the angler breathing down his neck in second place after fishing pellet throughout the contest.

Terry Cockburn (senior) was third at peg 10 after catching 71lb, while Andy Seale claimed fourth with 69lb 10oz after using meat at peg 27.

He caught on the paste from the start at Springwood Fishery but that was as good as it got, as the action died during the remainder of the contest and he was left with 28lb 4oz.

However, that was enough to win as his closest challenger, Lee Harrison, tipped the scales with 19lb 12oz for second place.

Pete Taylor was third, fishing paste at eight metres out on the pole to bank 18lb 2oz.

And Paul Grice finished in fourth place with 12lb 10oz.
