A PETROL company's plans to sell alcohol 24 hours a day from a Derby garage shop has been opposed by a petition of 170 signatures.
Brobot Petroleum has applied to Derby City Council for permission to sell alcohol from its shop at the Jet garage in Burton Road, Littleover. The store does not currently sell any alcohol.
A 170-name petition opposing the application for a licence has been received by the council although an officers' report on the matter said "some signatures appear to have been written by the same individuals".
The Derby Telegraph visited two streets opposite the garage and was unable to find anyone who had signed the petition but some residents said they were concerned about the proposal.
Rachel Hainsworth, 33, of Wade Avenue, said: "We don't get much anti-social behaviour but this might encourage more if it is selling alcohol for that long. Even in London, where I used to live, there weren't that many places open 24 hours."
Diane Connon, 54, from the same street, was "disappointed" that she had not heard anything about the application.
She said: "I'd rather not have it [selling 24 hours]. Usually, they put up signs on lamp-posts telling you there's been an application but I haven't seen anything."
Kevin Day, 45, of Wade Street, said the application "wasn't a huge worry".
He added: "My concern would be that, if it did transpire that there was an anti-social behaviour problem, what would the council do about it? If it's going to be subject to proper controls then fair enough."
A letter of objection sent to the council by B Singh said the new licence would "only increase public nuisance and crime and disorder in the area".
The shop's assistant manager did not want to comment on the matter and directed the Derby Telegraph to speak to the firm's head office but nobody there was available for comment.
An e-mail from PC Rich Morley, licensing enforcement officer, to the council's licensing team said police had "no objections to the application being granted".
A final decision on the matter is set to be made by the city council's general licensing sub committee tomorrow.
