A JOBLESS man has been banned from jogging around his home town after being caught flashing five times.

The court order was imposed on Ashley Shaw, 41, who was convicted of indecent exposure in Ripley after a trial.

The incidents took place in May last year when the victims included children as well as women, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

Shaw had denied the offence.

Judge Andrew Hamilton told him: ''I have had statements from a number of people you flashed at and they have been very upset by what has happened. One said 'he needs to be punished or he will carry on doing it. It is scary a man should do this.'

''One says 'it involved children and still I can't forgive him for what he has done to myself and my friends in Ripley.

"This man can't see what he is doing is wrong and needs locking up.

"He is a dirty man to think he can do these things and expect to get away with it."

The judge said an immediate jail term could have been imposed on Shaw, of Heage Road, Ripley.

Instead, he gave him a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, which means he will only risk being locked up if he commits another offence.

As part of the sentence, Shaw will be supervised by probation officers and will have to go on a one-on-one programme to tackle his problem.

The judge said: ''I say to the people of Ripley, if there is a chance to stop him doing these things by giving him psychiatric help and assistance from probation, that seems a better solution than locking him up for a few weeks when he could do it again.''

The jogging ban lasts for two years and covers Ripley.

The judge hoped that would give confidence to residents and told Shaw he would risk prison if he breached the order. Shaw must pay £250 prosecution costs at £5 a week and must lodge his address with the police for five years.

Martin Elwick, defending, told the court: ''The citizens of Ripley will not be troubled again.

''There is no doubt he has spent the last couple of months fearful of being sent to prison and so he is determined to take advantage of the help available.

''Clearly something was not right which caused him to behave in this way.''

Sarah Munro, prosecuting, told the judge: ''All parties were distressed by what they saw.''
