A DRUNKEN man racially abused a shopkeeper when she refused to sell him more alcohol, before throwing darts at police who came to arrest him.
Jamie Stopp, 24, walked into Etwall Stores after spending the day drinking, Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court was told.
When shop owner Kuldip Kaur Randhawa and her son Kulvir Singh Randhawa told him they would not sell him any more beer he became aggressive.
After the hearing Mrs Randhawa, 50, said Stopp, of Springfield Road, Etwall, repeatedly called her and her son racially-abusive names and offered to fight her son.
She dialled 999 at the shop, in Chestnut Grove.
Inspector Paul Cannon said officers were also abused by Stopp who refused to leave his home in Springfield Road and threw darts at them from an upstairs window.
Stopp pleaded guilty to two racially-aggravated public order offences and was jailed for 12 weeks.
Magistrates handed the father-of-two a harassment order banning him from the shop until April 29, 2015, and from contacting Mrs Randhawa or her 26-year-old son.
Mrs Randhawa said: "Jamie is a regular in the shop and has a lovely girlfriend and two young kids. Normally he is OK and perfectly nice to us so I don't know what happened to him on this occasion, I can only assume he acted like he did because he was so drunk.
"My son could see he was clearly very drunk so he refused and Jamie called him all sorts of offensive names.
"I spoke to my son in Punjabi, telling him to try to get Jamie out of the shop and Jamie said 'what are you talking to him in another language for?' Then he insulted me, using more racially abusive names."
The incident happened on April 26. Stopp appeared in court last week and pleaded guilty to both offences.
Insp Cannon said he was pleased that the magistrates dealt with Stopp so severely.
He said: "We do not tolerate racially-abusive language in South Derbyshire and we certainly do not tolerate someone throwing darts from an upstairs window at our officers.
"I would also like to commend Mrs Randhawa and her son for the responsible way they refused to sell more alcohol to a man who was clearly very drunk.''
