Millwall fans criticised for sick chants

RAMS fans have roundly condemned a section of Millwall supporters who taunted them with sick songs about the Philpott fire.

Some of the away supporters were heard by Derby fans singing "Murderers" and "You burn your kids alive" during Saturday's 1-0 Rams win at Pride Park Stadium.

One home fan contacted the Derby Telegraph to complain about the chant, calling it "a slight on the memory of the children".

Julie Wilson said she heard Millwall fans singing both chants towards sections of the home crowd.

The 37-year-old, of Ripley, said: "It was disgusting.

"I know there are chants that some fans sing deliberately to taunt their opponents but this was just sick."

On the Derby Telegraph's Facebook page, one man, Keith Pearce, said the sick chanting was the work of a "small minority" of the 1,054 fans who had travelled to support the Lions.

He said: "It was just the immature nature of a small minority who profess to be fans."

Deb Davis added: "Congratulations, Millwall. You have just reinforced your status as having the worst fan base in the country. You must be very proud."

Jade Philpott, 10, and her brothers Duwayne, 13, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six and Jayden, five, all died following a house fire at their home in Victory Road, Allenton, on May 11 last year.

Their parents, Mick and Mairead Philpott, were convicted of six counts of manslaughter, as was family friend Paul Mosley, following a seven-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

A spokesman for Derby County declined to comment on the specifics of the chanting. He said: "We believe it is down to Millwall to comment on this issue."

On the Derby Telegraph website, Rick Deckard said: "I'm genuinely sick of Millwall fans. They never change.

"Throughout their history, they have had a reputation for violence and trouble – even fighting among themselves at the FA Cup semi-final.

"They stain the reputation of football and decent fans at other clubs get tarred with the same brush."

A spokesman for Millwall Football Club said there were offensive exchanges of chants between both sets of fans.

He added: "Clearly, some offensive comments were made between both sets of supporters at the match but we do not condone the part that Millwall fans played in that."

PC Rob Beeston is Derbyshire Police's football intelligence officer and co-ordinates the force's involvement at Rams home matches.

He said Saturday's game was a category A fixture, meaning there was "a low potential for disorder".

He said there was one arrest of a Millwall fan for being drunk and disorderly but none related to the chants.
