The boys are back in town!
Thin Lizzy's classic tune heralded the arrival of the Lady Boys of Bangkok into the atmospheric Sabai Pavilion, who strode onto stage in their usual dazzling, provocative and entertaining style.
The popular gender-bending show has now become a regular feature of Derby's springtime entertainment line-up and the performers' highly elaborate dance routines and costumes are guaranteed to delight their audience who flock back year after year to enjoy the colourful evening of light-hearted entertainment.
Drawing on the glamour of Hollywood and the traditions of British Musical Hall shows for inspiration, The Lady Boys offer a western-flavoured show but with a notable twist. The combination of bawdy songs, contrasts with the glittering line-up of beautiful performers who gracefully strut their stuff to an eclectic range of classic and contemporary hits from the world of pop.
The 70 and 80s disco era was highlighted at one point with nostalgic hits from the Bee Gees while a finale featuring the great Tamla Motown divas; Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and Tina Turner went down a storm. For the younger audience members there was a Girls Aloud cameo plus a tribute to JLS and a lively version of Gangnam Style.
Audience participation was also high on the agenda with encouragement to sing along to the Roy 'Chubby' Brown's parody of the song, Living Next Door to Alice. A little more than gentle encouragement was applied to certain male members of the audience who soon found themselves up on stage, either enjoying a boogie or becoming the butt of the joke.
The essence of the show is to provide a stunning visual spectacle and offer the audience a good night out.
This year's show, Glamorous Amorous certainly lived up to its name with its never-ending supply of beautiful, shimmering awe-inspiring costumes. And if you are willing to let down your hair a little and fully enter into the spirit of things there is no reason not to go away with a smile.
