A DESSERT parlour that opened in Derby four months ago has scored top marks in its debut hygiene inspection.
Heavenly Desserts – which adopted a Willy Wonka theme for its grand opening last October – scored five out of five when visited, unannounced, by a city council inspector.
Its menu consists of more than 100 desserts and the shop, in London Road, close to Westfield, is one of several stores being opened up across the Midlands.
Founder and chief executive Nizam Mohamed said he was delighted that Derby's store had achieved top hygiene marks.
He said: "I'm very pleased. The score is important because people want to eat in fancy places that are clean. The shop is doing great. It's been quite busy. We're open until midnight and we've had customers who choose to eat at home and then come here for their dessert."
Popular chippy Steve's Fish Bar, in Alvaston, has a five-out-of-five hygiene certificate to match its five-star Seafish Friers Quality Award.
General manager Nick Neocleous said: "We've had top marks for the past four or five years. It's straight-forward – keep your kitchen clean. If you make a mess, clean it up."
The chippy's sister shop in The Parade, in Mickleover, run by Mr Neocleous's cousin, George Neocleous, also scored the maximum hygiene score.
Other eateries that scored top marks included Nandos in Derby's Market Place, Graze Restaurant in Friar Gate, Frankie & Benny's in Derwent Parade, The Friary in Friar Gate, the Joseph Wright Centre and The Oast House in Foresters Leisure Park.
Meanwhile, the newly-refurbished Smithfield pub, on Meadow Road, scored four.
Landlady Claire Muldoon said it was a "pleasing start". She said: "The pub was still half a building site when we were inspected so we're quite happy with a four."
The Florence Nightingale in London Road was awarded a three, while Bupa-run Shelton Lock Nursing Home scored two out of five.
A spokeswoman for Bupa said action would be taken to improve the low score. She said: "Our residents' wellbeing is our number one priority. We're never complacent and will continue to focus on improving wherever we can."
Morledge eatery Mediterranean Cafe was graded a four in July 2011 but dropped down to a one in its latest inspection. Owner Bekir Yuksel said: "The biggest problem is I wasn't here at the time of the inspection. I have the report and all the points are now ticked."
Spice Hut, on London Road, scored one for the second successive inspection, while Abbeys Food Store, in Abbey Street, received zero stars. Nobody from either business was available for comment.
